The way I work

I’m not here to line you up in front of a wall. I’m here for the piggybacks, the muddy wellies and the bit where everyone’s laughing at the dog. The real, slightly chaotic story of your family, right now.

I’m Tom, a documentary family photographer based in Burnley, Lancashire. I photograph relaxed, unposed family sessions on location and at home across the Ribble Valley, Clitheroe, Pendle and Manchester. Sessions are £100 an hour and usually last one to two hours.

What a session looks like

An hour or two, one whole story

  1. Arrive and settle

We meet somewhere you love. I say hello, the kids suss me out, and nobody has to look at the camera.

  2. Wander and play

Walks, piggybacks, races, leaf fights. I follow along and catch what happens, with the odd nudge towards good light.

  3. The quiet bits

The cuddles and the looks between you. Often the frames you’ll treasure most come right at the end.

Brother doing a handstand on the grass while his sister watches
Family of four in a laughing group hug among pine trees at golden hour
Parents walking down a leafy path holding hands with their young son between them

Somewhere that’s yours.

Your favourite woods, the park you always end up in, the walk you do every Sunday. Places with meaning make photos that mean more.

Two ways to do it

Out and about, or cosy at home

Family exploring the grounds of a historic hall on an autumn afternoon

On location

Woodland, parks, fields, a lake, the grounds of a hall. Room to run, explore and be loud. This is where I love to be, and where the best stories happen.

At home

Pyjamas, the sofa, the kitchen, the window light you see every day. Perfect for new babies, little ones and slow mornings. Just your family in your own space, no set-up lighting or plain backdrops.

Family photography questions

How much does a family photoshoot cost?

Family sessions are £100 per hour. Most families book one to two hours, so a session is usually £100–£200.

How long is a family photo session?

Usually one to two hours. That’s long enough for everyone to relax and forget about the camera, and short enough for little ones.

Where do family sessions take place?

Mostly on location, somewhere that means something to you: woods, parks, fields or a favourite walk across Lancashire. I also photograph relaxed sessions at home.

What if the kids won’t cooperate?

They don’t need to. I’m not after perfect behaviour or everyone smiling at once. Tantrums and snack breaks are part of family life, and part of the story.

What should we wear?

Whatever you’re comfortable in and can move about in. Soft colours that sit well together work best. Skip big logos, and bring wellies if we’re heading somewhere muddy.

When will we get our photos?

Within 4 weeks, in a private online gallery where you can download your favourites and share them with family.

Do you photograph newborns and babies?

Yes, at home, as part of a family session. I always prefer natural light and real moments, but I can bring my own lighting and a simple backdrop if a room needs it. The focus is your whole family together.

Do you photograph weddings too?

Yes. I’m a documentary wedding photographer across Lancashire and the North West, with the same honest, unposed approach. See wedding photography.

Let’s tell your family’s story.

£100 an hour, on location or at home. Tell me a little about your family and I’ll reply within 24 hours.
