Sophie & Steven's Wedding at Holmes Mill, Clitheroe | A Ribble Valley Real Wedding

When Sophie and Steven told me they were getting married at Holmes Mill in Clitheroe, I knew we were in for something special. If you haven't come across it yet, Holmes Mill is a beautifully restored textile mill in the heart of the Ribble Valley — home to Bowland Brewery, with exposed brick, huge windows, and that industrial-meets-cosy character that photographs like a dream.

A Venue With Real Character

So much of wedding photography comes down to light and texture, and Holmes Mill has both in spades. The brickwork, the beams, the brewery backdrop — it all gives photos a warmth you simply can't fake in a hotel function room. For couples planning a Ribble Valley wedding, it's honestly one of the most photogenic venues in Lancashire.

Sophie & Steven's Day

The day ran from midday celebrations right through to the evening, and it was full of exactly the moments I love to document — the nervous laughter, the hugs that go on a bit too long, and guests who properly let their hair down. One of the most touching moments of the day came before the ceremony: a first look between brother and sister. Those quiet few seconds — the reveal, the reaction, a proper hug — are exactly why I love documentary photography. You can't pose that.

The groomsmen also delivered one of my favourite shots of the year so far: the classic cigar moment. Some traditions exist for a reason.

Stealing the Newlyweds Away

My favourite images of the whole day came when we slipped away for twenty minutes of couple portraits among the bunting and festival buzz of the courtyard. The soft, even light was perfect — and this is always my advice to couples: build in a little time after the ceremony chaos settles. The photos you get when you finally exhale together are the ones that end up on your wall.

The day was originally planned as five hours of coverage, but as the evening rolled on, I genuinely couldn't put the camera down — so I didn't. Sophie and Steven's only job that day was to enjoy every second, not to watch the clock, and some of my proudest images came from those unplanned evening hours. That's the beauty of a relaxed approach: the best moments don't run on a schedule.
