Hi, I’m Tom — a documentary wedding photographer based just down the road in Burnley, and Holmes Mill is one of my favourite venues in the Ribble Valley to shoot a wedding at.
I photographed Sophie & Steven’s wedding here in July 2026, and if you haven’t been inside yet, you’re in for a treat. Holmes Mill is a beautifully restored former textile mill right in the heart of Clitheroe — all exposed brick, huge windows and genuine industrial character. It’s the kind of space that gives you real texture and real light to work with, whatever the weather’s doing outside.
My style is documentary and unposed. No stiff line-ups, no forced smiles held three seconds too long — just your actual day, captured honestly, as it actually happened. Holmes Mill suits that approach perfectly. It’s a venue with personality in every corner, so there’s always something worth catching, from quiet morning moments getting ready to the point in the evening when everyone’s properly letting loose on the dancefloor.
The Venue
What it’s actually like photographing a wedding here
Holmes Mill is run by James’ Places, and they only ever host one wedding at a time — which, as your photographer, I really appreciate. No competing for space, light or quiet corners with another event happening down the corridor.
A few things I’ve learned from shooting here:
Light & range
The mix of natural light through those big mill windows and the moodier, more atmospheric interior spaces gives real range across a day — bright and airy in the morning, warm and dramatic once the evening sets in.
The Mill Yard
The outdoor Mill Yard is brilliant for relaxed group shots and candid moments once the formal photos are done — it’s got a laid-back, sociable feel that photographs really naturally.
Clitheroe Castle
Clitheroe Castle is a short walk away, and when the light’s right at golden hour, it’s well worth the trip for a handful of couple portraits with the castle and valley behind you.
Everything on site
With the Spinning Block Hotel on-site, plus the food hall and beer hall right there too, your morning prep and evening wind-down can both happen without anyone needing to travel. That makes for a genuinely more relaxed, unhurried day — and relaxed days make for better photos.
